About Samantha Witting
(also known as Sam; Samantha Basten)
Attorney Samantha Witting is a courtroom lawyer at heart. She enjoys litigation, thinking on her feet, and fighting for someone in front of a judge, and she brings that advocacy to families navigating child custody matters. But what she values most about being a lawyer is simpler than any of that: helping people through some of the roughest moments of their lives. Her clients get both sides of that equation, a litigator who is comfortable in court and an advocate who genuinely cares about how their case turns out.
Samantha comes to family law after eight years with the Cook County State's Attorney's Office, where she served in the Child Protection division prosecuting abuse and neglect cases. That work put her alongside children who had been hurt, parents on both sides of abuse, and families struggling with mental health and substance issues, experience that gives her a rare depth of perspective on what is truly at stake when a family is in crisis. Through the office, she volunteered at domestic violence shelters, housing shelters, and residential treatment centers for children, and she participated in Lawyers in the Classroom, teaching middle school students about the law. She also took a college course on teaching that included student teaching at the preschool level.
Samantha's path to the courtroom started early. When she was young, her aunt would babysit with Court TV all day, and she was fascinated watching attorneys question witnesses and deliver closing arguments; she knew one day that would be her. She earned her bachelor's degree in Psychology from the University of Illinois Chicago in 2004, drawn to the study of human behavior and taking psychology and sociology classes with law school already in mind. She went on to earn her law degree from John Marshall Law School in 2007. During law school, she worked as a 711 licensed law student with the Cook County State's Attorney's Office, first in the Civil Division handling lawsuits brought by prisoners against the Cook County Department of Corrections, then in the Felony Division in Bridgeview, where she handled contested motions and a trial.
After years of handling some of the heaviest cases in the courthouse, Samantha knew she wanted a change, but she was not willing to give up helping people through difficult times in their lives. Family law gave her that path. The cases still call for compassion and someone who genuinely cares, and that is exactly what she offers. Her drive comes honestly: her hero is her mother, who came from a big family with no money for college and built a career trading stock by working her way up, at a time when most traders were men. That example of persistence shapes how Samantha approaches every case she takes on.

Samantha has been married for 20 years and is the proud mom of two sons, ages 14 and 16, who both play hockey, plus three dogs at home. In her free time, you will find her reading, cheering at her kids' hockey games, or riding rollercoasters with her family at theme parks. She loves that Illinois delivers four seasons, sometimes all in one day, and that Chicago is a great town for sports fans; attending games with her family is her favorite local tradition. Fond memories include trips to Lake Geneva when her kids were younger, and her coolest travel adventure was a 2023 family trip to the Bahamas, where they swam with pigs and held nurse sharks. As part of the Sterling team, Samantha is proud to serve families in Naperville and across Illinois with courtroom skill, compassion, and a genuine commitment to helping clients move forward.
