Every one of us wants to protect against any loss in the future.

This rule applies whether you are going through a divorce or not.

A solid plan requires that you understand how much you insurance you need — for some of us that requires us to understand what insurance is and what you need for the future.

April CarlisleI interview April Carlisle of Farmers Insurance so you know how a insurance agent can help you in a divorce, and tips for being prepared for life after a divorce.

April, you have approximately eleven years of experience as an insurance agent.  What types of insurance do you offer to clients?

My focus is to help our clients insure their lives.  I help clients with property and casualty insurance, life insurance, auto insurance, as well as home and renters insurance.  I also insure businesses too.  I want clients and their businesses to have peace of mind knowing that they are protected from bad events or catastrophes.

What is the best advice you can give divorcees?

You need to examine all of your current policies and figure out what you need to change or add after your divorce.  For instance, if you are moving out of the home, for instance, you will need to get your own homeowners or renters insurance.  Or, if you plan on keeping the home, you will want to keep the policy and remove your significant other.  Planning is essential to make sure you have everything you covered at the end of your divorce, and are not in an accident without insurance.

When should divorcees start preparing and getting quotes for insurance?

I suggest divorcees start collecting documents and getting information about costs of insurance while they are going through the divorce process.  Even though insurance policies cannot be changed during the process of a divorce, for instance you can't just take your spouse off of the auto insurance, you should start getting information about how much coverage you need.  So, at the end of the divorce process, everything is done and is just waiting for it to be signed and executed.

How are you different than other insurance agents?

I offer clients great customer service and availability.  I am available 24/7.  If you have a house flood, or a car accident – I am there to help answer client questions and talk about next steps in the process for a claim.

April, are you willing to meet with clients to help them starting planning for the future?

Yes, we can meet in person.  Or, if you want to talk by telephone and exchange information by email – I frequently do that as well.  I can do what is most comfortable and easiest.

Great.  How can clients contact you?
