About Whitney A. Johnson
Divorce is a very emotionally turbulent time, to put it mildly. Without someone there to be a sturdy and calming force at your side, it can be even worse. Attorney Whitney A. Johnson thrives on helping people in even their most difficult times. She is not only a reassuring presence, but a fierce advocate for her client’s best interests.
As a Madison family law attorney, Whitney is experienced in the areas of divorce, child custody, child support, and mediation. She has built her career on cases helping people, getting her start at Gingras, Thomsen & Wachs in Madison. There, she practiced civil litigation, employment law, civil rights, and professional malpractice as well as family law.
Whitney sits on the board and serves as Chair of the Women’s Caucus of the Wisconsin Association for Justice (WAJ). Additionally, she is also on the board for the Legal Association for Women (LAW) through the State Bar of Wisconsin. In 2019, she was awarded the Super Lawyers Rising Star for her work in personal injury.
From as far back as high school, Whitney knew she wanted to be a lawyer. An extremely hard worker, she managed to graduate college early while still managing to fit in a semester abroad in Ireland. Soon after, she went on to earn her law degree at Valparaiso Law School in Indiana, where she graduated cum laude. While there, she was an editor of the Law Review and coached the International Moot Court. Never one to stop helping people, she also was a dean’s fellow, mentoring students at risk of failing out of law school.
Always up for a challenge, she enjoys finding solutions to impossible problems. Thanks to her competitive spirit, she keeps clients energized and hopeful even in the face of divorce’s most difficult challenges. Combined with her sincere passion for helping people in need, she is a compassionate and effective advocate.
But Whitney is always deeply aware of the people and families at the heart of every case. She understands the importance of finding compromise and making sure families feel safe, especially when children are involved.
Her passion for protecting society’s most vulnerable came in part from observing her mother, a social worker for Dane County. Now, she enjoys the unique opportunities she has as a lawyer to positively influence people’s lives.
While an undergraduate, she met her fiancé, John, as a freshman. They both ended up practicing law and now live happily in Madison together with Mister and Mac, their two rescue dogs. Ever since her dad owned a bait shop in North Dakota, she’s loved boating and the water. It should come as no surprise that she considers any vacation with a cozy cabin and a lake as nearly perfect.
If not working on a case or on the water, she is enjoying everything Madison has to offer. You might find her grabbing a cocktail on a warm summer night, hiking, or enjoying a microbrew and a cheeseboard.
