Jennifer Hruz of Viva Wellness sat down with Anthony Karls for the Flourishing Families series to discuss the impact of using a weight loss coach. Jennifer has had her struggles with weight loss and understands the anxiety and depression that accompanies living with obesity.
Weight loss coaches help us understand how to lose weight and live healthily. “They find the barriers and roadblocks that get in the way of weight loss and wellness,” Jennifer says. We need someone to help develop confidence and a belief that we can get it done. There is a positive impact on the family when we learn to eat right and cope during times of stress.
A Weight Loss Case Study
One case study, determined that after 24 weeks, participants who worked with a professional health coach lost more than 9 percent of their body weight on average (Wiley Online Library). Other control groups were led by peers only (fellow members of the group) and mentors (people further along in their weight loss journey.) At 6 months the professional-led group averaged 9.6 percent weight loss, the peer-led group 9.1 percent and the mentor-led group achieved 5.7 percent.
While all control groups lost significant weight, the study demonstrates the vital role professional weight loss coaches can play in helping people lose weight. The study found that the group that was led by professional health coaches had 5 percent more of them lose over 10 percent of their body weight than the peer-led groups and over 40 percent more than the mentor-led groups. Professional weight-loss coaches trained in behavioral weight-loss treatment and integrative wellness therapies consistently outperformed the peer-led and mentor-led groups when it came to losing a more significant percentage of body weight.
