I was arrested for a DUI in downtown Milwaukee. I was not able to make a phone call for what seemed to be forever. At what point am I supposed to get my phone call after being arrested?
Criminal Defense Attorney Response:
The short answer is after they book you.
What this typically means is the police will book you, take your fingerprints, take your information, research your background looking for warrants in other places, assess your medical condition ensuring you are not going to get sick or die in jail, and once they are ready they will give you your phone call. Booking will take several hours as there are often several others sitting in holding cells waiting to also be booked.
The most ideal situation is contacting a criminal defense attorney prior to getting arrested to help prevent the arrest in the first place. “
