Question Details:

I am currently being investigated for a relatively petty computer hacking crime. I modified my high school transcript to help me in my application process for some competitive colleges. I understand the seriousness of what I did, but at the same time I wasn’t stealing money from anybody and I didn’t alter any other records besides my own. Is this something that is severe enough that I’ll need to consider hiring a criminal defense attorney for?

Family Law Attorney Response:

This is a great question.

As technology continues to grow, more and more cases deal with computer hacking or digital misrepresentation.

The short answer to your question is yes, you should hire a criminal defense attorney as soon as possible. This is especially true if they are in fact already investigating you as you mentioned.

Although it may seem petty to you, breaching the school’s security system for personal gain is something that could subject you to several computer related crimes. Depending on the severity of the attack you could be looking at misdemeanors or even felony charges. My best advice to you would be to not talk to anybody else, including those investigating you, until you have contacted a criminal defense attorney to represent you.
